Tele-referral for trauma

by Ken Dunn | Jun 12, 2020 | in Urgent and Emergency Care

The referral of trauma cases including compound fractures and burn injury by Emergency Departments often results in the unnecessary transfer of patients for visual assessment. A pilot running with all Manchester Emergency Departments for the last three years has demonstrated the benefits of secure image tele-referral in reducing unnecessary transfers and rationalising the delivery of trauma-based services.

Despite the burn injury version of the system being centrally funded for national roll out, plus the evidence from the successful pilots there appears to be resistance to the adoption of such systems in the NHS at large. Changes seen over the pandemic period need to be adopted as a matter of urgency as unnecessary transfers expose patients and carers to transmission risks which are entirely avoidable.

What is needed to sustain the change?

National adoption as the new 'normal'.
