Better care for wrist fractures

All wrist fractures that attend the Minor Injuries Unit that are displaced are being discussed with the orthopaedic consultant who is present in fracture clinic in the same corridor. If manipulation is needed, it is done in the plaster room using a mini-C-arm X-ray machine by an orthopaedic consultant or senior orthopaedic trainee and a good quality cast applied by the plaster technician.

This addresses several issues:

1. decision about whether or not to manipulate

2. availability of senior orthopaedic staff to perform the manipulation

3. live X-ray screening (very low dose) until a good position is achieved, preventing repeat trips to the X-ray dept

4. good quality POP application

This will reduce the number of patients that will end up having surgery.

What is needed to sustain the change?

What is your region?

Sounds like a great service. Please share any data with respect to patients avoiding inpatient care or future surgery

Hi Rob. We are currently running a prospective audit but anecdotally we have significantly reduced the number of wrist fractures that we are operating on.
